PlayStation games are coming to PC, and other signs the end is nigh

Image
This isn't some  hack . It's not a magic trick. Sony is actually, really, truly bringing PlayStation 3 games to your Windows PC, console wars be damned. This fall, you'll be able to play previously exclusive games like Uncharted 3 and Shadow of the Colossus on a Windows laptop. I know, because I did. The catch: you'll be playing those games over the internet with Sony's streaming game service, PlayStation Now. Think Netflix. PlayStation Now has already been around for a couple of years on the PS4, PS3, PS Vita handheld, plus a handful of Blu-ray players and smart TVs. For $20 a month or $45 for three (£13 monthly in the UK, but alas, not available in Australia), the service gives players unlimited access to a long list of over 400 PlayStation 3 games. (The service is available only in those countries as well as in Canada and Japan, with Belgium and the Netherlands currently in beta.) Like Netflix or any other streaming service, the quality can ...

Paper cut: Can a saw made out of paper slice through wood?

Image
Paper always seemed like the wimpiest player in Rock, Paper, Scissors. Sure, it's easy to imagine a heavy rock crushing a pair of scissors, and we all know that scissors can cut paper. But how does paper win simply by covering rock? Paper proves itself a lot tougher than it looks in a new video from carpenter John Heisz of the I Build It website and YouTube channel. In the simple two-minute video, Heisz uses one sheet of regular white printer paper to cut out a round saw-blade shape, and inserts it in his saw. It seems like the thin piece of paper can't possibly cut anything, but he builds up slowly, testing the blade on paper, then cardboard, then finally moving on to a small piece of wood, which it slices through easily. Don't get too excited, paper pushers. When Heisz tries a thicker cut of wood, the paper blade chugs maybe halfway through before crumpling up against the wooden surface and surrendering in a torn heap of dead tree. "Wh...

Neonode's AirBar uses beams of light to turn any laptop into a touchscreen laptop

Image
Neonode's Air Bar is the latest PC accessory that wants to make traditional laptops all touchy-freely. Ever since Microsoft so heartily embraced finger-friendliness with Windows 8, accessory makers have been striving to figure out a compelling way to add touch capabilities to non-touchscreen displays, be it in the form of fancy styli paired with infrared receivers, gesture control scheme like Leap Motion, or touch-sensitive overlays that you plop on your laptop’s display. But sadly, every single solution has been either lacking in functionality or just plain overpriced. Enter Neonode’s Air Bar—potentially. The AirBar’s a slim sensor that magnetically latches onto the bottom of your Chromebook or Windows laptop’s display and connects via USB. Once it’s hooked up—Neonode says it’s plug and play, with no extra drivers necessary—the device casts a beam of light across your screen, and you can poke, pinch, zoom, swipe and scroll around with your hand the...

Image
AUSSIES are sitting on a billion dollar gold mine and don’t even know it. Data obtained from eBay shows Australian smartphone users have an estimated $6.4 billion worth of second hand handsets sitting in their homes. This coincides with research from Deloitte Global, which claims used smartphone sales will generate more than $17 billion for their owners on a global scale. eBay’s head of Electronics and Emerging Technology Mark Bulgin said the ever-evolving landscape of the smartphone industry meant there was also money to be made. “With Samsung releasing the Galaxy S7 smartphone this week, and Apple rumoured to follow with the iPhone 7 release in the near future, now is the perfect time for Aussies to sell their older models to fund the upgrade,” he said. Mr Bulgin said the average selling price for an iPhone 6 Plus is marginally more than the more recently launched Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge, despite being released more than a year ago. “The average selling pri...
