A 5.1-magnitude earthquake shook Lake County on Tuesday evening, followed soon after by at least two smaller aftershocks, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The quake, centered about 12 miles north of Upper Lake, struck just before 8 p.m. It was felt as far inland as Chico and to Fort Bragg on the coast. Aftershocks measured magnitude 2.7 and 3.0.
“We felt the whole building moving underneath us,” said Jennifer McKnight, chef at the Boathouse Bar and Restaurant on the north shore of Clear Lake. “The equipment in here was moving. I was trying to run outside, but I couldn’t, it was too intense.”
She said about 30 people were in the restaurant at the time of the quake and nearly everyone evacuated during the shaking. The building held up fine, though — there was no damage and no one was injured, she said.
“It felt like we were rolling on the ground,” said server Jessica Sanders. “But nothing fell. The building rolled very well with it.”
McKnight said she talked to her husband at their nearby home after the earthquake, and he told her the surface of the lake “was really shaking, like it was raining.”
“I’ve lived in Lake County since I was 5 years old, and this was the strongest one I’ve ever felt,” McKnight said.
Authorities in nearby cities said they had not heard reports of damage or injuries.
